Today, we step into Herod’s triclinium. A triclinium was an ancient Roman dining room with at least one set of three benches for reclining. (The word itself can be broken down tri/clin/ium, with “clin” meaning to recline.) Given the architecture of Herod’s palace, many believe this area was used to have audiences, in addition to hosting elaborate banquets and feasting.

The current 3D animation style allows each piece of the set to be created individually and reused from set to set. For example, the curtains seen here were actually taken from the curtains in the temple set and adjusted to fit a Roman setting.
Below you can see a couple of requested edits on the décor for this set. Our animators strive to create sets that are full and accurate but not cluttered.

It is difficult to see in these shots, but Herod’s temple is visible outside the windows of this set. This temple was built by Herod the Great, most likely in an attempt to win favor with the Jews. When rendering indoor sets, animators strive to keep in mind where a building is and what direction it’s facing. A reference map used by our animators for this area of Jerusalem can be seen in the collage below.
