This week, step into the house of Caiaphas, the high priest of Israel during Jesus’ time. It was in this house that one of Jesus’ trials was held. However, it had been a meeting place for Jewish leaders plotting against Jesus well before His actual arrest. We read in Matthew’s Gospel, “Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him” (Matthew 26:3, ESV).

Reflecting Matthew’s description of the high priest’s house as a palace, the iBIBLE team has created a large and multi-floor structure, made of fine stone and containing multiple courtyards. Extra-biblical sources, such as the historian Josephus, also confirm that the high priests of this time lived a rich and luxurious lifestyle.

The courtyard of the high priest’s house saw another significant Biblical event: Peter’s denial of knowing Jesus. His first denial came when a servant was letting him into the courtyard, and the other two occurred as he was interacting with bystanders and servants of the high priest (Matthew 26:69–75; John 18:15–18, 25–27).

Archeologists have discovered an ornate ossuary (a box used to inter bones after decomposition) with an inscription that reads “Joseph son of Caiaphas.” Scholars believe this ossuary likely contains the bones of Caiaphas from the Gospels, noting that “son of Caiaphas” could easily mean he was of the family of Caiaphas and was referred to by his family name in the Gospels. The ossuary features flower-type shapes similar to the ones the animators chose for the tile floor of Caiaphas’ main reception hall, which is pictured below.
