This week, we invite you to walk the halls of the Persian kings who ruled the Achaemenid Empire, which existed from approximately 550 to 330 BC. As you approach the throne, your gaze is drawn to the loyal soldiers who stand on the king’s right and left. These men were part of the elite infantry, dubbed by later Greek historians as the “Persian Immortals.” Join us as our talented animators, through careful research, reconstruct the depiction of these infamous fighters for upcoming episodes of iBIBLE.

The Persian Immortals were a well-known yet mysterious group of ancient infantry in the Achaemenian army. Much of what scholars know about these soldiers comes from the writings of the Greek historian Herodotus. The Greco-Persian Wars, a series of battles between Greek city-states and Persia, took place from approximately 492 to 449 BC. Herodotus recorded details about these encounters, providing insights into the Persian forces.

This elite unit was referred to as “immortal” because it consistently maintained a force of 10,000 soldiers. If a soldier fell, he was promptly replaced before the next battle. The unit always appeared to be at full strength, which created an image of invulnerability to their enemies and earned them the alternative nickname “Ten Thousand Immortals.”

These Persian men served as the king’s personal bodyguard and consisted of Persians, Medes, and Elamites as the Persian empires encompassed many subcultures and religions. Carved reliefs of these men have been found at the Achaemenian capitals wearing elaborate robes with gold jewelry. The most distinguished soldiers within the unit were honored to have a gold pomegranate on top of their spears.

During the height of Persia’s power, God used its kings to fulfill His purposes for His people. The Scriptures record that King Cyrus issued a decree to release the Jewish exiles from Babylon, allowing them to return home and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, just as the prophets had foretold.

Under subsequent Persian rulers, this work continued through Jewish leaders like Ezra and Nehemiah, who guided the people in restoring worship and rebuilding the city.
