This week, step into Jerusalem in the time of King David, the golden age of Israel. See how our animators recreated this unique and spiritually significant city, within whose “citadels God has made himself known as a fortress” (Psalm 48:3, ESV).

Above are some artistic models and renderings of what Jerusalem likely looked like at the time of King David. The animation team follows these models to create a finished product that is as accurate as possible to the “city of David” described in Scripture (2 Samuel 5:9). David was the first Israelite king to rule from Jerusalem, conquering the city occupied by the Jebusites after he became king of Israel. Before David, King Saul ruled from Gibeah, just north of Jerusalem. Scholars think David likely chose Jerusalem for its well-fortified location with mountains surrounding it on three sides.
Another strategic advantage of Jerusalem was the Gihon springs on the east side of the city, which provided a reliable water source when the city was besieged. The springs are located just beneath the structure that juts out from the walls on the right side of the pictures below.

This walled area contained a pool (as shown in the picture below) where people could access the water without leaving the safety of the city.
The large building in the back right corner of the city below is King David’s palace. Archeologists have discovered a large structure in this exact location and dated its construction to about the time that David began his reign in Jerusalem. The stepped stone structure extending down next to it was also built about the same time. It fills a gap in the bedrock of the hillside and was likely built to support the palace.
