This week, we take a look at Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, who is called “he whom you [Jesus] love” (John 11:3, ESV). This man was dead and buried before Jesus came and raised him back to life.

The character of Lazarus required our animation team to create at least two versions of him. The first one is paler and still has his burial wrappings around him (pictured on bottom in the image above). The second is a healthier version of him for later scenes after he is raised (pictured on top). Our animators were careful to ensure that the first version was sufficiently sickly-looking, while still retaining the same basic design for the character.
Pictured below is the full character of Lazarus in his grave clothes. The animators gave the wrappings some slight discolorations and tinges of yellow to portray them realistically as the wrappings of a dead man in a tomb. John 11 describes Lazarus emerging from his tomb in a rather mummy-like fashion, with his hands and feet bound by linen strips and his face covered. Obviously, he is already a bit unwrapped in the image below, but you can still see the cloth hanging down from his head where it covered his face.

Between Jesus’ own death and resurrection and the people He (and later His disciples) raised, the Bible actually tells us quite a bit about burial practices of the time. When people died, it was customary for the body to
be washed and anointed with perfume or myrrh, details that are mentioned at Dorcas’ and Jesus’ deaths, respectively (Acts 9:37; John 19:39). The Gospel of Luke mentions women wanting to anoint Jesus’ body with “spices and ointments” (Luke 23:56b). And, of course, Lazarus’ story tells us how the bodies were wrapped.
How great it is that we serve a God Who was never afraid to encounter death but met and defeated it triumphantly!
