In this week’s behind-the-scenes email, we take a look at King Uzziah’s fortifications of Jerusalem. Uzziah was the tenth ruler of Judah, and he was loyal to the Lord. The Lord blessed him and prospered him, and he was able to strengthen Jerusalem, as we read, “Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate and at the Valley Gate and at the Angle, and fortified them” (2 Chronicles 26:9, ESV).
The above image shows where the gates were that Uzziah strengthened, as well as sketches of ancient catapults that may have been used to defend them.
Below is a snapshot of our animators’ work on bringing these additions to ancient Jerusalem’s walls to life. A previous version of Jerusalem had already been made, which you can read about in an earlier behind-the-scenes email here.
In the final image you can see how some of these edits have been added, with corner ridges on the towers added in, and catapults placed in between the two towers.
