This week, we invite you to learn more about the animators’ careful considerations in capturing Jesse, the father of King David. Explore the animation process that RevelationMedia employs to create a historically informed portrayal of this ancient Bethlehemite for upcoming episodes of iBIBLE.

To depict Jesse accurately, the animators researched common Biblical clothing styles. Archeologists have discovered stone-sculpted depictions of Old Testament Israelites from the ancient Assyrian empire. These depictions show people wearing a layered look with an undergarment and cloak. One or both of these layers nearly always possesses some form of fringes. This style is rendered in the loosely fringed edges of Jesse’s cloak and the tassels on the cloth at his waist.

Overall, Jesse’s clothing is relatively ordinary with slight ornamentation. Although Jesse is most famous for being the father of one of Israel’s greatest kings, he possessed no significant political standing himself. Yet from our limited Biblical accounts of him, we know he was decently well off. He gave a gift of a goat, bread, and wine to King Saul when David became his personal musician (1 Samuel 16:20). His grandfather, Boaz, was also a prosperous farmer. Overall, his lack of personal notability attests to God’s power in bringing great things out of ordinary people.
In addition to Biblical accuracy, the animators also strive for consistency down to the smallest details. Features such as Jesse’s height and hair texture are intentionally made similar to family members that have already been created, like his father, Obed, and his sons.
