This week, learn more about the research behind capturing arguably the most influential location in the Gospel accounts: Golgotha, “the place of the skull.” Below, you’ll see a look at the animation process RevelationMedia uses to faithfully create the crucifixion site for upcoming episodes of iBIBLE Life of Christ.
The artists conduct research into topography, maps, archeology, native vegetation, and more to invite audiences into the world of Scripture. This first image shows a frame from the final crucifixion site design, emphasizing the landscape and plant life of Jerusalem at the time of Jesus’ death.
To reflect historical accuracy, the team placed the walls of Jerusalem near Golgotha, which was a quarry. This shows how crucifixions were visible to passersby as a deterrent from breaking the law. Native fig and ancient olive trees shape the landscape, highlighting Jerusalem’s antiquity and sanctity. The next images reveal the real-world photos and maps that inspired this design.
However, while the site’s features have been carefully researched and reconstructed, some details remain open to artistic interpretation. The animators used the map below to discuss Golgotha’s distance from the city walls and nearby mountain heights. These choices are important details that come together to bring the scene to life.
