Creating The Birth of Jesus Coloring Book
RevelationMedia is designing black-and-white spreads for The Birth of Jesus coloring book. This coloring book details the story of the birth of Jesus in simple, easy-to-read words, with beautiful coloring pages so that children can experience the story on their own terms.
Each scene of iBIBLE is carefully researched and designed piece-by-piece to be as accurate and engaging as possible, and this coloring book is no exception. It follows the storybook of the same name released last Christmas.
Each spread of the coloring book is based on its corresponding spread in the storybook. This first image shows the second spread from The Birth of Jesus storybook. Notice the detailed background and the words telling the story on the left.
The artists then create an initial design, begun here below. This design is heavily based on the original spread, but they must change some aspects because of the switch from 3D (above) to more 2D (below). Then, the lead artist and the iBIBLE producer go through the design and edit small portions of it. Also, notice that the words have not been added yet; that will be completed in the final design phase.
Lastly, you can see the second draft of the drawing begun above. More details have been added such as an increase in the amount of grass, details on the characters’ faces, less overall shading of the trees and bushes, and more pronounced lines around the main characters’ clothing. This draft will go through one more round of editing before the words are placed on the spread and it is ready to be added to the coloring book!
