This week we’ll take a look at a wheat field near Capernaum from Jesus’ time. This set may very well be used for multiple iBIBLE episodes, as many of Jesus’ parables refer to farming and agriculture, concepts His audience would have been familiar with.
You may notice a tower-like structure in the near right corner of the wheat field in the image below. This is a watchtower, used by farmers during harvest to watch over their fields.

First-century farmers were not quite as possessive of their land as most people are today. They were not watching to make sure no one went near their fields, as walking through fields and even hand-plucking the grain was not considered a violation of property by the Israelites (see Deuteronomy 23:25).
Jesus’ own disciples did this, and neither Jesus nor the Pharisees accused them of stealing (the Pharisees accused them only of breaking the Sabbath—see Matthew 12:1–8). However, leaving fields completely unattended may have exposed them to thieves, wild animals, or fire. Many farmers also used the lower level of the towers as a cool space to store crops and even as a lodging during harvest.

Above is an image from the early stages of creating this set. At this point, the animators were focused on getting the basic layout right, as well as the right texture for the wheat.
Below is an image toward the end of the animation process. Here the animation team was ensuring that the set is filled out with foliage and is visually appealing. They were also careful to make each detail accurate to the time and location, sometimes referencing flora from present-day Israel for authenticity.
