Because the Israelites rebelled against God, He sent them into exile in other nations. In His grace and compassion, He later brought them back. This week, we look at the iBIBLE set of the ruins of Jerusalem and see what it may have looked like as the Israelites worked to rebuild it.

The first image shows Jerusalem burning as described in 2 Kings 25:8–9 when the Babylonians came in to conquer the nation of Judah. The city would remain in ruins for 70 years until the decree of Cyrus, king of Persia, allowed the Israelites to return and rebuild the city (Ezra 1:1–4). If you would like to compare this set with Jerusalem before its destruction, you can check out this behind-the-scenes post.

This next image shows Jerusalem mostly destroyed. The occasional tower remains partially upright, but the walls are gone, and most other structures are as well. On the right side, however, you may notice a platform and a square building. That is the new temple, often called Zerubbabel’s temple since it was built under the oversight of Zerubbabel, the first governor of Judah after the exiles began returning.

The last image is a closer shot of Jerusalem after the exiled Israelites returned to it. In addition to the temple in the background, many of the houses have also been rebuilt. Scripture tells us that the Israelites built their houses before construction of the new temple was complete. God rebuked the Israelites, saying, “Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?” (Haggai 1:4, ESV). And the Israelites obeyed the word of the Lord and rebuilt the temple.
