This week, walk with the ancient Israelites around the ruins of Jericho, the city whose walls miraculously collapsed. This city’s destruction reminds us of both God’s power and His grace.

The above image shows Rahab’s house with a red rope coming down from the window. The book of Joshua says Rahab’s house was “built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall” (Joshua 2:15b, ESV). While Scripture does not say explicitly that Rahab’s house survived the walls’ destruction, its preservation is implied by the fact that she brought her family into her house to protect them, and the spies (whose lives she had saved) retrieved her and her family after the walls had collapsed. Archeological evidence also indicates that there is one section of the walls from this period in history that did not collapse with the rest.

Above can be seen a more complete version of the current Jericho set. The animation team intentionally added a path, as one would have been worn by the Israelite army marching around the city 13 times. They also added patches of wildflowers to enhance the visual appeal of the set.
In both of these images you may note that only the top, redbrick part of the wall has collapsed. That is because the bottom part is a retaining wall to stabilize the city. The graphic below shows how archeologists believe the collapse of Jericho’s walls may have played out.
