This week we will be taking a look at the house where Nicodemus met Jesus. Scripture does not tell us anything of the exact locat
ion in which they had the famous conversation recorded in John 3, only that Nicodemus sought Jesus at night. However, given that many scholars believe Nicodemus chose nighttime for secrecy, a private location, such as someone’s house, would have been a logical location.

The above image shows the interior of this house, populated with basic household items and decor such as jars and draperies. Each of these items are created individually and can be moved around the set and even reused in other sets. The windows are still blank at this point in the animation process; however, they will be filled in at a later stage.
While Scripture does not say anything about the exact location in which Jesus met Nicodemus, it was almost certainly in Jerusalem. The passage directly before Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus records Jesus celebrating the Passover in Jerusalem (John 2:23–25), and it would make sense for Nicodemus, called a “ruler of the Jews,” to also be there at that time (John 3:1, ESV). Given the house’s location in the city of Jerusalem, the windows will most likely show a variety of other buildings, fitting for a city.

As can be seen in both the concept images above and the animated set below, homes all throughout Biblical times had flat roofs, which functioned to some extent as an additional floor of the house. The Old Testament contains examples of roofs used for storage space (Joshua 2:6) and a space for guests (1 Samuel 9:25), and the New Testament records Peter using the roof as a place to pray (Acts 10:9). It is quite possible that the roof is where Jesus and Nicodemus would have talked, since it likely would have provided a quiet and separate place from everyone else in the house.
