This week, visit the burial site of our Savior, where Christ resurrected and angels walked, through our 3D reconstruction of the garden tomb. This tomb was given in honor of the crucified Christ by Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy man. In this garden, the defeat of sin and the redemption of mankind became certain when the stone rolled away. Below, you’ll get a glimpse of the animation RevelationMedia is using to reimagine this momentous tomb for the upcoming episodes of iBIBLE.
The artists carefully researched the location’s topography, archeology, history, and culture to draw audiences into the world of Scripture. The first image depicts a frame from the garden’s exterior design. In first-century Jerusalem, many families had tombs cut directly into rock. Archeologists have documented thousands of such burial sites. However, only the wealthiest households could afford the luxury of round, rolling stones to seal their entrances.
According to the four Gospels, Joseph of Arimathea was a respected member of the Sanhedrin, a group of Jewish religious leaders. Joseph secretly followed Jesus due to fear of these Jewish peers. However, after witnessing the brutal death of his Messiah, Joseph demonstrated great faith by openly asking Pilate for permission to bury the body of his Lord.
Joseph likely didn’t know that his act of honor toward Christ fulfilled the centuries-old prophecy said by the prophet Isaiah: “And they made His grave with the wicked and with a rich man in His death, although He had done no violence, and there was no deceit in His mouth” (Isaiah 53:9, ESV, capitalization added).
The animators worked carefully to capture the beauty and awe of this location, where Christ was vindicated and the redemption of humanity was secured. Christ emerged from His garden tomb in victory. He appeared first to a woman, demonstrating his love once again for outcasts, since the testimony of women had no legal grounds in ancient Israel.
Can we visit the garden tomb today? This location represents the cornerstone of Christianity. Since our Savior’s resurrection, Christian tradition has long identified the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in modern-day Jerusalem as the location of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial. Archeology shows that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre lies outside what was Jerusalem’s first-century city walls. Archeologists emphasize the importance of this detail since it corroborates Scripture’s testimony and Jewish burial customs.
While some debate the authenticity of this location being the geological location for the tomb, the Sepulchre has long been a major Christian pilgrimage site since Emperor Constantine commissioned it in the fourth century. Its enduring presence testifies to centuries of devotion.
