Daniel entered Babylon as a teenage exile and became a senior official across four successive kings’ reigns. Scripture states that Daniel “became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom” (Daniel 6:3, ESV).
Despite being honored with royal robes, Daniel was never at home in the Babylonian court. He was a prophet who interpreted kings’ dreams, read God’s handwriting on the wall, and continued praying even when laws forbade it, ultimately standing faithful through the lions’ den.
Archeological discoveries of Babylon’s palaces and temples confirm the grandeur of the courts where he served and helped guide the animators’ interpretations of his attire and story.
Near the end of his life, Daniel was granted a vision of a Heavenly figure clothed in white linen with a golden sash. Just as Daniel’s royal robes reflected earthly honor, this vision pointed forward to the Son of Man, the eternal King who would depose all others. From exile to prime minister, Daniel’s life pointed beyond Babylon’s splendor to the sovereign Christ who reigns forever.
