Animating the Beguiling Queen Jezebel

This week, we invite you into the creative process behind animating one of the Bible’s most infamous figures: Queen Jezebel, wife of Israel’s King Ahab, for the upcoming episodes of iBIBLE. Known for her cunning and influence, Jezebel urged Israel into Baal worship, hunted down God’s prophets, and orchestrated the murder of Naboth to seize his vineyard.
Queen Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians. To portray her historically and visually, our animators studied Jezebel’s court attire and political influence as portrayed in the Bible. When confronted by her approaching enemy Jehu, who sought to end her seduction and sorcery, Scripture describes Jezebel as a woman who “painted her eyes and adorned her head” (2 Kings 9:30b, ESV).
To capture Jezebel’s cunning and influence, the animators studied the ornate makeup and décor she would have worn to display her status and political presence. The illustrations below guided their artistic interpretation of this notorious queen.
Jezebel was also known for manipulating her husband. Archeologists have discovered both King Ahab’s signet ring and Queen Jezebel’s. While Ahab’s ring was relatively simple, Jezebel’s was far more ornate and decorative. Her signet ring, used to seal official court orders, reflected not only her authority but also her dominance over her husband even in political prowess.
The picture below was not referenced by the animators in their design of Queen Jezebel. However, it showcases the ruins of a grand temple of Baal where Queen Jezebel would have advanced the pagan worship in Israel.
