From Elizabeth to Mary
Luke 1 contains the true story of two miraculous promises from God to two women—Elizabeth and Mary. The first episode of iBIBLE featuring New Testament stories is titled The Annunciation, and uses a new technique to transition between the stories of these two cousins. Take a look behind the scenes as we see how this technique is used.
To begin the transition between Elizabeth’s and Mary’s miraculous pregnancy stories, the pregnant Elizabeth is shown looking out from her window onto the landscape beyond. Luke 1:24 states that, “for five months she kept herself hidden,” and Elizabeth is shown behind the closed windows of her house.
In the gif at the bottom of the email, the viewer’s perspective zooms out from the window and turns to view the wilderness between Elizabeth and Mary. The topography of Israel—hills, pastoral land, wilderness—is shown during this panoramic shot, as well as shepherds and animals of that region.
The viewer’s perspective then changes to illustrate the distance between the two cousins. Though we do not know exactly what town Elizabeth and Zechariah lived in, it was somewhere in the “hill country” in a “town in Judah” (see Luke 1:39). Moving through the terrain between them, the viewer is transported from Elizabeth and Zechariah’s house to where Mary lived in Nazareth (see Luke 1:26) and zooms in through her window, where Mary is about to be greeted by a very special messenger from the Lord. This distance is estimated to have been somewhere between 80 and 100 miles.
This transition is a creative way to show the distance between two locations and to show how these two events, separated by distance, could be so similar. It also helps to visually break up the episode and show the beautiful landscape that surrounded these women of the early first century AD.
