The Baptism of Jesus

Right at the beginning of Jesus’s ministry, we find in the Scriptures the beautiful scene of Jesus’s baptism. Look with us at new iBIBLE concept art for the baptism of Jesus. This art is currently in the planning stages of the design, and it gives you an inside look at the process behind creating iBIBLE!

John the Baptist, the one sent before Christ to prepare the way, preached the message of repentance in the wilderness surrounding the Jordan River (see Isaiah 40:3). People heard his message and confessed their sins, and John baptized them in the river.

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’…Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. —Matthew 3:1–2, 5–6

The Jordan River is a thin, meandering stream of water that during the first century AD ran through Judea before flowing into the Dead Sea. As you can see in the concept art above, the Jordan River is portrayed as a small and winding river. The area around the river is drawn as trampled and clear of brush because of how many people were making their way to be baptized by John and because the area widened out as it neared the Dead Sea.

Jesus came to John to be baptized to “fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15). John was at first hesitant to baptize the One he knew as his Savior, but He obeyed the direction of Jesus (see Matthew 3:14). After Christ was baptized, the Spirit came as a dove and the Father spoke as a voice from heaven “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17b).

Below is a series of shots planning out the action of Jesus being baptized. As you can see, the shots show the crowd being baptized by John and Jesus coming down to the water. The camera then cuts to John helping Jesus up from the water and the Spirit descending as a dove upon Him (see Luke 3:22).
